Dear Pamela: I need to update my 2nd floor bathroom in a 1916 Colonial house. I intend to use a contractor but I find that they are not necessarily good at the design/cosmetic aspect. The bathroom is very small. It has a shower-tub with white standard tile, a sink with a vanity and a toilet, and a small radiator. I intend to refinish the bath. The floor is concrete covered with very ugly cracked linoleum & this really needs taking care of. The ceiling appears high compared to the size of the room.

This room needs some "pizzazz." I like the clean Scandinavian-type look. Have you any suggestions to make this look classy but different? Is there a good resource that deals with small bathrooms? I am sure there are new products on the market that I am not aware of and underfloor heating might be a good idea.

By the way I also need to update the downstairs half-bath so I could use any leftovers down there!

Thanks,
Margaret

Dear Margaret: Congratulations on taking the plunge to redecorate your bathroom. Now more than ever, stylish design for the bath allows you to express creativity and add personality. Here are some options for your small space:

Try DECOLAV for streamlined, contemporary vanities and vessel sinks.

Consider Kohler for faucets, including their wall-mounted falling water series with matching accessories. Kohler also has sleek, one-piece toilets, as does Toto.

Install radiant heat with mosaic stone or porcelain flooring.

Tile walls halfway up and apply an ornamental border to make your bathroom look more designed and architectural.

Hang a traditional or contemporary chandelier for pizzazz. This will also bring your ceiling line down.

Put up a decoratively framed or Venetian-style mirror to complement modern cabinetry.

Cover your walls with textural wallpaper to enliven your space. Then, accessorize accordingly.

Think about a wrought iron, wall-mounted vessel sink for your downstairs powder room. For a dramatic look, paint the walls a dark color and the ceiling and trim white.

Bathrooms have become a focal point for interior design. Even in small spaces there's opportunity to be both fashionable and functional.

Good luck!
Pamela
