Designing eye
By Rudy Dicks
It takes a good eye to work in interior design, but it's truly a hands-on profession, which is why Pamela Bayer recommends that people interested in this profession work as an apprentice. "I apprenticed with an interior designer and an architectural firm," says Ms. Bayer, owner of Pamela Bayer Interiors in Hudson. "I also started working with a contractor because I really wanted to know the bottom line of building, which is important with interior design because it's not just interior decorating." Ms. Bayer gets involved with everything from the location of electrical outlets to plumbing, "Nine times out of 10 I am there with the architect with the plan."
Ms. Bayer has a background in fashion, starting at Saks in accessories, moving to homeware, and then working for Ralph Lauren as a personal shopper. "Starting that way was one of the best things I did," she says. "You should get at least a two-year college education in some type of design field, even if it's fashion design, because fashion design and interior design really work hand-in-hand." Ms. Bayer calls it "the best profession I have ever been in. I am excited every day getting up for work."
