Timely transformations
Redecorating doesn't have to be an epic job. In fact, there are a variety of ways to perk up a tired design. Depending on your time frame, here are some expert tips on how to give your house a fresh face.
QUICK FIX
Simply changing a few details can give a room a whole new look. "Get an inexpensive or ready-made slipcover for dining chairs or a sofa," suggests Dorene White, president and co-owner of Cottonwood Home and Style in Chagrin Falls. "Try putting an area rug down or buying new lampshades for fun color."
Try painting one wall. "Without too much work accent walls just look beautiful, says Pamela Bayer, an interior designer in Hudson. "And you can get bold with it because it's only a half gallon of paint." Or switch drawer and cabinet knobs and plates for a quick lift.
WEEKEND WORK
Pick a small room and get creative. "Bathrooms are an easy thing to turn around quickly," says Bayer. "Re-wallpapering a powder room takes a half day to prepare and one day to hang the wallpaper."
A new piece of art also perks up a room. "Introduce a leaning mirror or a new mirror for the mantel," suggests White. "People don't realize how affordable mirrors are. They're very decorative."
MAKEOVER MONTH
Create a floor plan for a room and think about ways to rearrange existing furniture. "Sometimes it's good to have someone else with fresh perspective come in, because they may see a different arrangement," says White.
Paint kitchen cabinets and change the knobs and hinges. "They have cabinet paint now that looks fabulous," says Bayer. "It really changes the look of the kitchen."
