Dear Pamela:
I have a dilemma. In my living room I have a plain navy blue couch, plain navy tab-top curtains, and light blue walls (bad paint shade that had to stay for 6 years because my husband refused to repaint!). Thankfully, we will be repainting soon, so no more blue walls, but the only place for my couch to fit is, unfortunately, against the plain blue curtains. I am trying to find some new curtains that aren't too expensive, but if I can't find any, are there any ways to spruce up plain curtains cheaply? And is there a way to make them insulated? Anything to break up the sea of blue would be great! Any color suggestions to complement the blue?
Thank you so much for your time!

Dear Feeling Blue in Middlefield:
Six years is a long time to sing the decorating blues, but interior design is all about timing, and now's the perfect economic climate for finding great bargains.
To break up the monochromatic palette in your living room:
Consider Benjamin Moore's assortment of historical paints for your walls, particularly those in camel tones. A tan hue will complement your plain navy couch and curtains, and transform them into a richly accented sofa and drapes.
If you decide to replace the drapes, try Jo-Ann or Calico Corners for a paisley or striped pattern with touches of blue, camel, and burgundy. The cost shouldn't be over the top, especially if you hunt for closeout fabrics.
If you opt to keep the drapes, think about reviving them with multicolored, decorative tassel tiebacks. A seamstress can thermoinsulate new or existing drapes with a special backing.
Once you've addressed the walls and drapes, try a new matching throw or accent pillows for your sofa. Affordable accessories like candles, bowls, art, and other decorative objects can complete your new look. Retailers like Target, Pier 1, Z Gallerie, and Crate & Barrel are discounting these items, often deeply.
Sometimes it pays to wait, but that will be our little secret!
