ABOUT
LONG BEACH ISLAND
Long Beach Island (LBI)
is an 18-mile-long barrier island located off the coast
of Ocean County, New Jersey.
The island consists of:
• Barnegat Light, a quaint fishing village.
• Long Beach Township, including posh Loveladies and North
Beach.
• Harvey Cedars, a 19th century whaling village.
• Ship Bottom and Surf City, sites of intriguing historical
happenings, including shipwrecks and sea monsters.
• Beach Haven, famed for Victorian homes and the Surf Light
Theater.
Barnegat Light hosts the
second tallest lighthouse in the United States, which
was commissioned January 1, 1859. The tower light was
165 feet above sea level.
It remained a first-class
navigational light until August 1927, when the "Barnegat
Lightship" was anchored 8 miles off the coast. The
tower's light was reduced over 80 percent, but it was
not extinguished until January 1944.
In 1988, the lighthouse
was closed for repair; it re-opened for visitors in 1991.
Although its light no longer functions, the tower is
flood-lit at night and continues to attract thousands
of visitors.
Now a state park, visitors’
information can be obtained by calling 609-494-2016.
